Pelvis Shape and Hip Dips

Pelvic Width

Wider pelvises place the iliac crest further from the midline, increasing the lateral distance to the greater trochanter. Women on average have wider pelvises than men, which is one reason hip dips are more common and visible in women.

Pelvic Tilt

Anterior pelvic tilt (pelvis tipped forward) stretches soft tissue over the trochanteric depression, making it more visible. Posterior tilt (pelvis tucked under) can slightly reduce visibility by changing the draping angle of soft tissue.

Iliac Crest Height and Shape

The height and curvature of the iliac crest affect the visual contour of the lateral hip. A high, curved crest creates a more dramatic visual transition from waist to hip. A flatter, lower crest creates a smoother transition.
