Hip Dips and Genetics
Hip Dips Are Inherited
Three skeletal features determine hip dip visibility, and all three are genetically determined: pelvic width, femoral neck length, and femoral neck angle. If your mother has visible hip dips, you are significantly more likely to have them.
What Genetics Does Not Determine
Genetics sets your bone structure. It does not determine your muscle mass, your body fat percentage, or whether you pursue cosmetic procedures. These are within your control and influence hip dip visibility independently of bone structure.
Heritability Estimates
Pelvic architecture has a heritability estimate of roughly 60-80% based on twin studies and family analyses. This means 60-80% of the variation in pelvic width between individuals is attributable to genetic factors. The remaining 20-40% reflects environmental and developmental factors during growth.
