Body Fat Distribution and Hip Dips

The Paradox

Fat loss makes hip dips more visible because the cushioning over the bone gap decreases. Fat gain softens hip dips because the cushioning increases. This is the opposite of what most people expect — losing weight makes the feature you dislike more prominent.

Why You Cannot Target Fat

Fat loss is systemic. Your body mobilizes fat from all areas according to genetic patterns, not according to which muscles you exercise. You cannot direct your body to lose fat from the hip dip area specifically. This means diet and cardio alone are usually counterproductive for hip dips.

Fat Distribution Patterns

Women tend to store fat on the hips, thighs, and buttocks due to estrogen-driven patterns. Men tend to store fat on the abdomen. Post-menopausal women shift toward abdominal storage. These patterns affect hip dip visibility independently of total body fat.
